History of keeping statistics for PictureGo!

 

Before July 2002:

There was no statistics page yet. People had to register their PictureGo! version.  The registration e-mails were simply counted manually. The total summed up to 140 registered users.

 

 

July 2002 - January 2006

 

The counting for registrations started over in July 2002, when a new registration system was introduced (at the release of 2.0). By January 2006, over 3.500 people registered their version of PictureGo!

And once again, we started from scratch. The old registration system was dropped. Counting of users has become a fully automated system based on web log files.

What is a new PictureGo! user?

 

Every month PictureGo! will suggest to check if a new version is available. If the user follows the suggestion the file with the update information is read from the internet causing a registration record in a log file. This logfile is read every hour to be able to upload a fresh statistics page. Every user (ip address) is counted only once.

What if a user never checks for a new version?

 

Then this user will simply not be counted. This also means that these statistics are not more than the lowest estimate of the number of users that downloaded PictureGo!.
